August 29
Thursday August 29th
Today started off rainy. Apparently there was a thunderstorm last night that kept little Hadley (a 12 yr. Old Bishon/Poodle cross) trembling for a good part of the night. We heard nothing in our beautiful basement retreat!! And…. I slept in “again”!!
We were to meet cousin Margaret and Darwin Knutson, and Trudy, for breakfast at 9:30 am. Issue was that our car wouldn’t start yesterday - Karl and Charlie decided it was a dead battery. So pending an answer to that issue, Diana offered to lend us one of their cars.
We arrived at Lee’s Restaurant (a legion) at exactly 9:30 thanks to handwritten instructions from Diana we carefully followed. (Even a GPS can mess up). The parking lot was really crowded - we were worried that we might have to wait, but the hall was huge.
Breakfast came loaded with luscious food - truly better than any breakfast special I’ve had anywhere before!! We chatted with Darwin, Margaret, and Trudy for almost 2 hours. A wonderful time to fill in more of what’s happened in our lives over the past 10 or 15 years.
We spoke about children, grandchildren, and what they are doing in life. Trudy and Darwin are still working but it sounds only part-time right now.
We had some serious discussion about issues important to us/me. Darwin and Margaret are so full of knowledge related to Christianity, so a very interesting talk. And Trudy, although her opinions are a bit different, was also right on the mark!!
Diana and Charlie had picked up grand-daughter Aliyah and Jack their golden doodle so the house was full of laughter when we returned.
I spent the afternoon visiting with Diana and playing with little Aliyah. She is real character and reminds me just a bit of one of my girls when they were her age.
Meanwhile Karl tried starting our car and it worked this time!! Not sure what happened, but glad it did!! Charlie attached a charger and topped up the battery for us just to make sure.
They also solved the problem of our non-working cooler. Turns out it was a fuse in the car that had broken and had nothing to do with the cooler!!
Diana made a delicious pork loin supper.
Afterward, we went to visit Aunt Penny and Tammy. Their house looks exactly as I remember it. I could almost see Uncle Ted there. But it was great to see them again and just chat about family. Turns out that they are going on a cruise from Vancouver to San Diego, California, next month. Sigh…. We’re still hoping to go on a cruise, but perhaps next year.
This evening we discovered that Charlie plays guitar and is very good. We were treated to his singing along with a few of the songs he played. (He is good. If he lived in Kitchener, Karl would be trying to convince him to join the choir). Karl couldn’t resist joining in with The House of the Rising Sun.
