A road trip, our Grand Adventure for this summer!! 


We planned to have an early start, but best laid plans don’t always work out. Poor Max did not seem to understand that he’s not coming this time. But we reassured him that he would have a great time with Dawn, our gracious house-guest and doggy-sitter.


Remembering our Roadtrek tours, only better, right? Because this time we get to take our time and check out all the scenery….


Okay, so that might not have happened, lol.  Today was mostly about driving along major highways between big cities.  We did notice all the trees (between the cities). So many billboards advertising everything from hospitals and surgeons to lawyers who will help you if they (the doctors) happen to mess up. Lots more about casinos and just about anything you can think of. One even said “I hate …. “ someone’s name. Okay that one wasn’t nice and perhaps it referred to a politician seeing as there’s the big election coming up. 

 

You have to do “something” to stay busy.  We have our phones which would normally produce lots of distraction, but we turned mine off because of the potential cost and although we paid for US coverage with Karl’s phone….. it had no internet connection at all.  (Fido - likely a setup issue).


So I figure checking out billboards was better then playing punch buggy (my kids will know this one, and one or two may even be rubbing their shoulder as they read this)


I have to say, passing by Chicago was nothing like that wonderful broadway play. Not even a billboard suggesting fun things to do there.  Just a traffic jam that lasted an hour, on a Sunday afternoon no less!!


So, we made it to a Comfort Inn in Joliet, Illinois.  As we were both famished, we quickly parked our things in the room and hot-footed it to the Cracker Barrel Restaurant, right around the corner, for supper.  Oh how we love that place.  The food is delicious and plentiful, and our waitress, Hailey, was just so sweet!! I actually found a gorgeous mug that I managed to slip in as Karl was paying the bill.


Well that’s about it for today.  We drove a long way, but tomorrow should be a bit easier. We’ll head for Minnesota (Wabasha and then St. Paul), to find a few of the locations where “Grumpy Old Men” was filmed!

Friday August 30 This morning Chad, Charlie and Diana's oldest son who is a professional basketball player, came to visit, and Diana made a wonderful big breakfast complete with eggs, bacon, fried potatoes, and fruit. Chad is the typical son. He came into the house, hugged the dog, opened and leaned into the refrigerator to see what was there, lol! Seriously he did hug his parents first. Sounds like his schedule is not quite so busy now.   He played the summer season with the Winnipeg Sea Bears and they just finished.(professional basketball team). But he was interested in what we were doing and how our holiday was going too, which was really sweet.   Funny to see Diana’s little dog jump up into Chad’s arms for a cuddle!   Sunday September 1st Are we ready for September?? Not, but here it is anyway…. The weather matches the month today, chilly (14 C), so I guess not swimming weather, lol! Since the Valhalla did not have a free breakfast this morning, and we checked the in-house restaurant yesterday to discover that that breakfast is $20/person plus drinks, tax, and tip.   That was a definite “no.”   Happily we had our emergency breakfast kit (toaster and egg cooker), and Karl managed to convince the restaurant to at least give us some hot water.   So add to that the mysterious campfire sausage that we think is smoked (doesn’t say so on the package) and we had a really good breakfast in our room.   We still have fruit and banana bread from Diana so we are not starving.   We looked around the room before we left.   The Valhalla is a 3.5 star hotel with a conference centre. September 02

  Monday September 2nd   Today was another travel day.   We gathered up our things, then checked out the breakfast bar before leaving. We’ve actually been using one of the hotel luggage carts and filling it with suitcases, cooler, and the purple tote with all our emergency lunch and breakfast supplies. We get some interesting looks but hey, we come prepared! Wow, were there ever a lot of people in the breakfast room!! We were guessing that most of them were on their way home for school or work tomorrow.   But it truly looked like a United Nations with several countries represented. As we rolled our over-loaded cart out to the car, we noticed licence plates from several provinces and states.   No crazy curving roads or steep hills today. We think because it’s the last day of a long weekend, the roads were much busier than they have been for most of our trip.
